Term 1

20th Dec 2018

P5 SMD have had a great first term. Everyone has settled very well and have made the jump from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 without any problems.

Our first topic in P5 was Space and we have learnt so many facts about the planets. Did you know that there’s no sound on the moon or that the sun is 93 million miles away? We also based our class Assembly on Space and all the parents came to watch us. For the second part of this term we have been learning all about the Vikings. We are all very glad we don’t have to live in Viking houses today and that we can travel by ferry and not a Viking Long ship.

In Literacy we have been writing recounts and instructions. Our favourite instructions were how to make Hot Chocolate and also how to tie our shoe laces. Now everyone can tie their laces- well almost. In Reading we have a class novel called, How to Train your Dragon which we are all enjoying. P5 have also made a great start to Accelerated Reading. Accelerated Reading counts how many words our class reads each month and we are amazed by some of the totals.

In Numeracy we are working hard to learn our tables. We also have been working on fractions and time. We can tell the time using the analogue clock and the digital clock. We also know the calendar and can highlight important dates. P5 enjoyed learning all about 2D and 3D shapes and trying to construct and make our own.

In Music P5 have had the opportunity to learn either the cornet or the clarinet. Two music tutors came into school for a total of 15 weeks to teach us how to play these instruments. At the end we performed a show for our parents.

P5 have had the opportunity this year to be involved in Shared Education with Faughanvale. The 2 schools have made great links and P5 have thoroughly enjoyed all the Science work. At our last visit we had to design a helmet that would keep an egg safe when dropped from a height. As you can imagine we had lots of fun. We have some amazing engineers with great ideas and knowledge.

P5 SMD have all worked really hard this term. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.
